does it stay forever or does it wash off(the henna)

It lasts anywhere from a week to a month and does not wash off (it has to wear off on it's own).

It is time consuming as you have to leave the paste on for several hours (the longer the better) though.

Well, it is temporary and completely painless so I would say yes. Just be sure to bring a few good books to read (or even better, an ebook reader like a Nook or Kindle).
